Diwali 2026 Seller Playbook: Stock, Ads and Dhanteras Plan

Diwali 2026 is on Nov 8. Get your festive stock, ads and Dhanteras plan ready with this seller playbook, countdown timeline and worked examples.

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, with Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November. That is roughly three and a half weeks away, and the biggest marketplace sale events may already be behind you. The real money for many sellers sits in the gifting and Dhanteras window that is still ahead.

This playbook gives you a countdown timeline, an inventory formula, an ads framework with worked numbers, and a Dhanteras-specific plan you can start on today. For platform-specific sale prep, see our Myntra Big Fashion Festival and Jio Utsav guides.

In short: lock your stock first, fix listings second, scale ads on proven products third, and protect your dispatch speed throughout.

1. Stock: don't run out at the peak

A stock-out in the festive window costs more than at any other time, because the sales you miss don't come back after Diwali.

The inventory formula

Required stock = (baseline daily sales × festive uplift × days in window) + safety stock

An illustrative example:

  • Baseline daily sales: 30 units
  • Festive uplift (assumed): 2.5×
  • Window: 18 days
  • Safety stock: 20%

Festive demand: 30 × 2.5 × 18 = 1,350 units Safety stock: 20% of 1,350 = 270 units Total needed: 1,350 + 270 = 1,620 units Stock on hand: 400 units To order or send in: 1,620 − 400 = 1,220 units

[The uplift is an assumption. Use your own data, such as your Great Indian Festival or Big Billion Days numbers, as the baseline. See our Amazon Great Indian Festival 2026 seller guide.]

Stock checklist

  • Check inbound deadlines and receiving times for your fulfilment network, and send stock early
  • Keep inventory sync automatic across channels to avoid cancellations
  • Prioritise your top sellers and gift-friendly SKUs
  • Plan packaging in advance, including gift wrap where it makes sense
  • Keep a buffer for returns, damaged units and last-minute spikes

2. Listings: make them festive without breaking rules

  • Bundles and combos: gift sets and multi-packs raise order value and suit the season. Need help refreshing your catalogue? Our listing optimization service covers images, content and keywords.
  • Images: keep the main image compliant (clean background, no promotional text). Use festive banners only on secondary images
  • Keywords: add relevant festive terms such as "Diwali gift" naturally in bullets, description and backend search terms, where relevant to the product. Our Amazon keyword research guide shows how to find them.
  • Title: keep it factual. Promotional phrases in the title can get a listing suppressed (see our guide on why Amazon listings get suppressed)
  • Pricing and offers: work out your margin after fees, ads and returns before you set a festive price or coupon
  • Change in small batches: edit a few listings at a time so you can spot problems early, and avoid big edits in the last few days

3. Ads: scale what already converts

Festive CPCs usually rise as more sellers compete. Your conversion rate decides whether the extra spend pays off.

Ads worked example (illustrative)

  • Selling price: ₹799
  • Profit per unit before ads: ₹250
  • Break-even ACoS: ₹250 ÷ ₹799 = 31.3%
  • Festive CPC (assumed): ₹18

Conversion rate

Ad cost per order (CPC ÷ CR)

ACoS

Result

10%

₹18 ÷ 0.10 = ₹180

₹180 ÷ ₹799 = 22.5%

Profitable

6%

₹18 ÷ 0.06 = ₹300

₹300 ÷ ₹799 = 37.5%

Loss-making

The same ad spend is profitable or loss-making depending on conversion. If your ACoS is already high, start with our ACoS diagnostic guide. This is why you fix listings, reviews, stock and price before you raise budgets.

Ads framework

Phase

What to do

Pre-festive ramp

Launch festive campaigns, harvest search terms, add negatives

Build-up

Move budget to products with strong conversion and healthy stock

Dhanteras and Diwali peak

Raise bids and budgets on proven keywords and in-stock products only

Post-festive

Cut spend on weak terms, review results, keep gifting terms for Bhai Dooj

Rules to follow: don't advertise products that are low on stock, check budgets daily during the peak, and keep an eye on ACoS against your break-even number. For bids and negatives, see our guide to optimising Amazon PPC campaigns, or hand the work to our advertising team.

4. Your Dhanteras plan (6 November)

Dhanteras is associated with buying for prosperity, so demand often leans towards pooja items, home and kitchen products, utensils, decor and lighting, gifting hampers, sweets and dry fruits, electronics and appliances, and jewellery, depending on your category. For gifting ideas, see our Rakhi 2026 best-selling products guide.

  • Stock: make sure your Dhanteras-relevant SKUs are in stock and live by the end of October
  • Offers: schedule a Dhanteras deal, coupon or bundle ahead of time
  • Content: add Dhanteras and gifting angles to titles, bullets and images, within policy
  • Ads: raise budgets for proven, in-stock products in the days before 6 November
  • Delivery promise: show realistic delivery dates so customers can order in time
  • Regulated categories: precious metals, jewellery and food items have category-specific rules (for example hallmarking or FSSAI). Check approvals and labels before you list

[EDITOR: confirm any category-specific compliance wording with the category pages before publishing.]

5. Operations and account health

Festive volume exposes weak processes, and late dispatches and cancellations can hurt your account.

  • Keep dispatch within your SLA, and add staff or shifts for the peak
  • Confirm courier capacity and pickup schedules in advance
  • Keep customer support responsive to gift and delivery queries
  • Plan for the post-Diwali returns wave (see how Amazon returns work)
  • Watch Account Health and notifications daily. If something goes wrong, our guides on an Amazon account suspension Plan of Action and a Flipkart account block will help you respond fast

6 mistakes that cost sellers money in Diwali

1. Stocking out at the peak

Running out of stock mid-festival means lost sales and lost ranking, and the demand doesn't return later. Fix: use the inventory formula and send stock early.

2. Raising ad budgets before fixing conversion

More spend on a weak listing just burns cash, as the ads example shows. Fix: improve images, reviews, price and stock first, then scale.

3. Big listing changes at the last minute

Heavy edits close to the peak can trigger suppression or catalog issues when you can least afford them. Fix: finish edits in October and make only small tweaks later.

4. Ignoring dispatch SLAs

Late dispatches and cancellations can hurt your metrics and put the account at risk. Fix: add capacity, confirm courier pickups and track orders daily.

5. Planning only for Diwali day

Much of the gifting demand arrives before Diwali, around Dhanteras, and carries on to Bhai Dooj. Fix: plan across the whole five-day window.

6. No returns or cash-flow plan

Festive sales bring returns and tied-up stock and payouts. Fix: keep a buffer for returns and plan your working capital.

Festive checklist

  • Demand forecast and purchase orders done
  • Stock sent in and synced
  • Festive listings, bundles and images ready
  • Coupons and deals scheduled
  • Ads launched with negatives and break-even ACoS set
  • Dhanteras deals and content live
  • Dispatch, courier and support capacity confirmed
  • Returns and cash-flow plan in place
  • Daily Account Health and ads review scheduled

A store management checklist and a dedicated account manager can keep this running through the peak. For extra hands, our seller support team can help.

FAQs

When is Dhanteras in 2026?

Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, and Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday, 8 November. Calendars differ slightly on a few of the other festival days, so confirm secondary dates with a trusted panchang.

How much extra stock should I keep for Diwali?

It depends on your category and past performance. Use last year's festive data or your recent sale-event numbers to set an uplift, then multiply by your daily baseline and window, and add safety stock. The worked example above shows the formula.

Should I increase my ad budget before Diwali?

Increase it gradually and only for products that convert well and have enough stock. Festive CPCs usually rise, so check your break-even ACoS and watch conversion daily instead of raising budgets across the board.

Which products sell on Dhanteras?

Demand often leans towards pooja items, home and kitchen products, utensils, decor, gifting hampers, sweets and dry fruits, appliances and jewellery. Check your own search term and sales data to see what matters in your category. Our guides to trending products on Amazon and the best products to sell on Flipkart are a good starting point.

Can I add festive keywords to my listings?

Yes, where they are relevant to the product. Use them naturally in bullets, descriptions and backend terms, and keep the title factual. Promotional phrases and non-compliant main images can lead to suppression.

How do I protect my account during the festive rush?

Keep dispatch within SLA, avoid cancellations through inventory sync, respond to customers quickly and check Account Health daily. Fix any warnings immediately so that small issues don't become blocks during peak days.

Conclusion

Diwali rewards sellers who prepare early and stay disciplined. Lock your stock, make your listings festive but compliant, scale ads only on products that convert, and protect your dispatch speed through Dhanteras and Diwali. There is still time to do all of it, but not much.
